[Uganda] Smart telecom forays into mobile banking

Uganda’s telecommunication network company Smart telecom has launched a mobile money service dubbed SMART Pesa that targets to deliver affordable mobile financial services to all Ugandans. SMART Pesa customers will be able to send and receive money, deposit and withdraw cash, and make bulk payments such as salary disbursements. In the future, customers will also be able to access micro-credit and micro-savings accounts.

“Smart is one of the most innovative telecom companies in the market today. Just as we created a revolution in the data bundle market by providing cheap and reliable data bundles in the country which positioned us as the leading providers of cheap data bundles in the country today, SMART PESA seeks to create a revolution in Uganda’s mobile money market,” said Abdellatif Bouziani the Smart Group, CEO. 

To mark the launch of SMART Pesa, SMART has introduced an initial offer enabling customers to send money up to a maximum of Ugx 4 Million across any mobile network at a flat rate of only Ugx 100/-. To use Smart Pesa, Smart customers can dial *185# and follow the prompts.
“We know that financial inclusion is very important, not only to our customers, but to all Ugandans. From being able to send and receive money from family and friends, topping up airtime as well as bill payment; SMART Pesa will support people’s everyday needs, with robust systems that offer unparalleled reliability of service,” added Mr. Bouziani.

Smart Telecom also announced that is ready to support developers and young innovators who are intend to develop solutions based on Smart Pesa but also all technologies that SMART Telecom provides. In line with Smart Telecom’s marketing strategy, sending any amount of money to a tune of $1000 will be a flat rate of only 100 Uganda shillings ($0.05) across all networks.

Smart Telecom has done similar promotions to rev up sales for its data and voice packages.
