[Uganda] GOtv Pushes Lower Price Boundaries

GOtv, the digital terrestrial network of MultiChoice, has further pushed the price boundaries in the low-end pay television market after it introduced packages that customers can buy as low as Shs 5,000.

The move is likely to jolt the other players as MultiChoice tightens its grip on the lower segment, while remaining the dominant player in the upmarket. The GOtv Lite bouquet, which goes for Shs 5,000 per month, is set to be one of the lowest pack- ages in the market, and, as the company announced, comes with high-quality viewing.

"As a leading Pay TV brand, GOtv endeavours to give subscribers the best services on the market which are affordable," Patricia Kiconco, the GOtv business segment manager, said in a statement. She added that "this development makes GOtv Lite the most affordable package on the market."

The launch of GOtv Lite comes after MultiChoice recently reduced prices on all GOtv hardware decoders from Shs 104,000 to Shs 87,500. MultiChoice says the offer of such cheap packages comes at a time when GOtv is celebrating five years in the market. MultiChoice has been around for more than 20 years now.

To widen its network, GOtv recently took its services to Masaka, where it launched what it calls its superior package called, GOtv Plus, that goes for Shs 28,000 per month.

Albert Nga, the marketing manager of GOtv, said their entry into Masaka is in line with the objective of covering the entire country.

He said: "GOtv covers all Uganda's major towns including Arua, Lira, Gulu, Mbale, Kasese, Jinja, Entebbe, Iganga, Kampala, Mbarara, Masaka. We do not intend to stop there but to continue our expansion plan while at the same time making our services affordable."
