SMC Networks ready to bring IPv6 wireless value to SA

SMC Networks, a global provider of LAN hardware and broadband connectivity devices, has announced the launch of the SMC7904WBRA-N2 Barricade™, a three-in-one high-performance wireless ADSL2/ADSL2+ router that includes an ADSL modem, four Fast Ethernet ports, a USB 2.0 port for external storage devices, and 802.11n 300Mbps high-speed wireless functionality.

Offering Quality of Service (QoS) and multiple security features, the IPv6-ready router is an ideal, cost-effective solution for home and office users that want to stream high-quality video and audio files while still maintaining robust security and optimal flexibility.

The solution is now available to South African users via SMC Networks South Africa.

Paul Luff, country manager at the company says there is a strong demand for high-performance, affordable networking products within the small-to-medium segment of the market. Business growth is heavily dependent on infrastructure that can facilitate and help users leverage off the latest networking trends.

“Users within rapidly developing market segments want advanced networking infrastructure that has the capacity to handle aspects like voice, video and data transmission, virtualisation and cloud-based services,” adds Luff.

To provide the best possible DSL performance, the SMC7904WBRA-N2 supports the latest ADSL and ADSL2+ standards, with up to 24 Mbps* downstream and 2 Mbps* upstream and a long-reach rate from the ISP’s DSLAM site. This allows users to share a high-speed DSL Internet connection, music, videos, photos, and optional devices such as an external USB hard disk or Network Attached Storage (NAS) device with multiple users. In addition, the router’s built-in QoS engine helps prioritize Internet traffic to allow smooth VoIP-based phone calls and lag-free online gaming.

“SMC Networks is excited to introduce the feature-rich, three-in-one SMC7904WBRA-N2 Annex A ADSL2/ADSL2+ wireless modem router to the African market, the first SMC BarricadeTM router to be certified for the IPv6 Ready Phase II Logo,“ comments Jo Chang, European Product Manager. “Besides providing wired security features such as NAT/NAPT, Access Control Lists (ACLs), firewall protection via SPI, port forwarding, and IP/port/MAC filtering, the router offers wireless security features including WPA/WPA2-PSK, IEEE 802.1X, WPS and wireless MAC filtering.

“With support for IGMP proxy and IGMP snooping, the router is engineered to allow users superior IPTV streaming capability,” adds Ms. Chang. “Furthermore, the router also features a user-friendly installation wizard with ISP profiles built-in, making set-up quick and easy as once the country and ISP are selected, the ADSL parameters are set automatically.”

Features:

•               2.4GHz 802.11n WLAN with 2x2 Detachable 5 dBi MIMO Antennas
The SMC7904WBRA-N2 Wi-Fi solution is compliant with 802.11n specifications. As a Wi Fi AP/router, the router can achieve a 300 Mbps data rate using two 11n MIMO detachable 5 dBi antennas. Compared with the 54 Mbps data rate of 802.11g technology, the device provides almost six times faster Wi-Fi throughput.

•               High Security
The router provides NAT/NAPT and firewall features. The firewall supports not only IP/port/MAC filtering functions but also Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI). Virtual DMZ is also supported for providing servers for Internet users without jeopardizing private LAN security.

•               IPv6 Ready
The SMC7904WBRA-N2 BarricadeTM has been certified for the IPv6-Ready Phase II Logo. In addition to the Phase II-ready IPv6 core stack, the router provides major and advanced IPv6 features including IPv6 over PPP, IPv6CP, and DHCPv6 Client/Server/Relay, making it an ideal ADSL router for all possible IPv6 deployments.

•               USB 2.0 Port
The router provides file sharing features when an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive is attached to the USB interface. Users can access the files from wired and wireless connections. When out of the home or office, the files can be accessed through FTP.

•               Multiple SSIDs
The SMC7904WBRA-N2 supports multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs), up to four concurrently. This allows different access control and security for different Wi-Fi network segments, thus enabling the router to provide separate Wi-Fi networks for private and public use without sacrificing security.

•               Bridge/Router Mode
The router supports both Bridge mode and Router mode, enabling the device to be operated within different deployment plans.

•               Ease of Management
The SMC7904WBRA-N2 BarricadeTM is TR-069 compliant, which allows an ISP to monitor and provision the router remotely. This means the router is able to automatically upgrade firmware and other configuration settings from the ISP, significantly minimizing on-site maintenance and operation costs for individual devices.
