[Nigerian] NNPC Consolidates Use of ICT for Efficiency, Competitiveness

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Maikanti Baru, has said that NNPC was on the fast lane to attain efficiency and competitiveness through reliance on Information Technology.

Dr. Baru, who spoke during the inauguration of the corporation’s Information Technology Governance Bodies in Abuja today said IT would enable the corporation realize its 12 Business Focus Areas (BUFA) developed on assumption of office of his management team last year.

The 12 Business Focus Areas include: ensuring security of NNPC assets, developing new Business Models that would grant autonomy to the various units of the Corporation, settling Joint Ventures Cash Calls, Ramping up crude oil production and reserves growth and Growing NPDC as the Corporation’s cash cow.

Others are: focusing on gas development for both domestic and export market;  upgrading existing refineries and creating opportunity for refining expansion; Focusing on renewable energy and Frontier Exploration; Revamping the oil and gas infrastructure, Pursuing profitable ventures and common services; Ensuring professionalism and Accountability of the Corporation and Catering for the welfare of staff who are the critical stakeholders for the success of the vision.

Dr. Baru said the IT Governance bodies being inaugurated would moderate the alignment of IT with NNPC’s strategic intent and business objectives, thus serving as a tool that would enable the corporation reap the benefits of efficiency and competitiveness in its business activities.  

The GMD urged the members of the four IT bodies that were set up to be dedicated to their responsibilities as the exercise was in line with the transformation programme of the corporation.

Speaking at the event, NNPC’s Chief Operating Officer, COO, Corporate Services, Mr. Isah Inuwa commended the Group Managing Director for his support and commitment to the development of information technology in NNPC.

The COO said the setting up of the IT governance bodies was primarily to assign responsibilities and ensure accountabilities on IT usage in NNPC, with a view to deriving added value on investment.  

On his part, The Group General Manager, Information Technology Division, Mr Danladi Inuwa noted that laying the right foundation for highly robust and adaptable IT, has become very critical to NNPC’s business, adding that the foundation will ensure business agility and continuity for corporation.

Members of the committees were drawn from the Corporation’s Six Autonomous business Units.

The four committees are the NNPC Information Technology steering committee, chaired by the GMD with COO, CS, Mr. Isah Inuwa as alternate chairman, NNPC Information Technology Investment Review Board, NNPC Information Technology Security Management Committee and NNPC Information Management Committee.
