[Nigeria] Graduates develop app for National Health Insurance Scheme

Two graduate students from the university of American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola have developed an application for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). According to The Vanguard the Software Engineering graduates developed the app in an effort to improve the delivery of health care insurance services in their community.

According to reports Emmanuel Zidafamor and Samuel Ubaneche took inspiration from the experience of the operations of staff and devised a solution. The app, Patient Experience (NHIS PATEXP), manages a database of the NHIS and integrates all patients involved in the delivery of services utilising ICT. The graduates have upheld the mission of the development university, which is to come up with solutions to problems in their communities and impact the community positively.

Samuel Ubaneche, co-founder of NHIS PATEXP says the app will address multiple issues that the healthcare insurance sector deals with. “The system also streamlines drug pricing, reporting and billing to their associated Health Management Organisations (HMOs)”, say Samuel.

The graduates applaued the AUN for the knowledge they have aquired which resulted in the created of the NHIS PATEXP app. The app was developed as a final year Senior Design Project (SDP) and it has since been a success. Samuel and Emmanuel are responsible for training users, installing the system and maintaining it.
