Lesotho gov’t consults stakeholders on proposed mining legislation

Lesotho’s Ministry of Mining hosted a consultative stakeholders’ workshop in Maseru on Thursday as the country moves to revise its mining legislation.

The meeting followed the recent completion of the development of Minerals and Mining Policy with the technical support from the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa through African Mineral Development Centre.

Minister of Mining, Lebohang Thotanyane said the mining sector has been identified by the National Strategic Development Plan as one of the key economic drivers for Lesotho.

He further indicated that the mining sector currently contributes around 10 percent to the Gross Domestic Product of Lesotho.

The Minister noted that his ministry currently relied on the Precious Stone Order of 1981, Mines and Minerals Act of 2005 as well as the Mines and Minerals Amendment Act of 2014.
