[Kenya] PSA Group to start assembling two car models

PSA Group, the makers of Peugeot, Citroen and DS Cars has entered into a contract to assemble two car models in Kenya starting June.

PSA, which wants to reduce its dependence on European sales, will begin assembling the Peugeot 508 and will then add output of the new Peugeot 3008 SUV, the automaker said. The vehicles will be built using kits of pre-assembled modules with local partner URYSIA, its long-standing Kenyan importer and distributor.

The venture will initially produce about 1,000 vehicles annually, PSA said. The Peugeot brand previously assembled vehicles in the east African country between 1974 and 2002.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has welcomed the company saying the plant will help create jobs as well as promote sale of vehicles assembled built for Kenyans, by Kenyans and in Kenya, in support of the 'Buy in Kenya and Built in Kenya' initiative.

"We welcome an old friend who has chosen to trust in us because industries and investments in the country are on the rise," he said.
