[Egypt] Government mulls setting up integrated databases for Egyptian expatriates

Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Yasser ElKady has held talks with his Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs counterpart Nabila Makram, on the significance of using and integrating ICTs to serve Egypt's nationals abroad.

Talks tackled creating integrated databases for the Egyptian communities living abroad and establishing a fund to support the Consular Identification (CID) cards which include a package of benefits and incentives for citizens residing abroad, to connect with expatriates and enhance their active participation and social integration.

The meeting is within the framework of the State’s efforts to communicate with citizens living abroad and support their connection to the homeland.

ElKady said that integrating Egyptian expatriates’ data, as part of the national project of establishing integrated databases, will contribute to identifying challenges and needs of citizens abroad. Technology, he added, is capable of supporting citizens’ connections to their country of origin; the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) seeks always to serve expatriates by providing them with support and care.

Makram underscored the advantages of CID cards and highlighted their role in completing an accurate database, which will be implemented in cooperation with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior and Immigration.

The Ministry of Immigration provides a package of services to facilitate procedures by allocating a window at Egypt’s Civil Status Department, designed especially to serve expatriates on their visits to Egypt, similar to the one that serves people with special needs and the elderly to speed up the issuance of official documents, she added.

The cooperation is within the framework of efforts employed by MCIT, in collaboration with concerned authorities, to complete establishing integrated databases for citizens in order to support decision-making in government agencies through audited and updated data.
