Charles Muchene elected chairman of Barclays Bank of Kenya

Barclays Bank of Kenya has announced election of Mr. Charles Muchene as the Non Executive chairman of the bank.

Mr Muchene takes over from Francis Okomo-Okello who, after serving his full tenure, has exited the Bank’s Board but will continue to serve on the board of Barclays Africa Group Limited as an Independent Non-Executive Director.

Muchene brings to the board more than 30 years of experience in the financial sector as a professional accountant, consultant and business leader with extensive exposure to business issues both in the private and public sectors.

He has held various leadership positions including Country Senior Partner for Kenya at PricewaterhouseCoopers, which he held for 11 years and is currently the Chairman of the Board of East African Breweries Limited. He also sits on the Board of AIG Kenya Limited.

Muchene joins Barclays at a time when the bank is marking a century of its existence in Kenya while at the macroeconomic level; the banking sector is facing an increasingly dynamic and complex regulatory environment exerting pressure on the sector to rethink its business strategies and models.

“I am honoured and thrilled that the Board has entrusted me with the role of Chairman of Barclays Bank in Kenya, an institution with a rich pedigree spanning 100 years and a culture of building and nurturing enduring relationship with its customers and communities,” said Muchene.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya and the Institute of Directors, Kenya.

“I would like to pay tribute to Okomo-Okello for his eminent leadership that has helped the bank remain one of Kenya’s most respected financial institutions. Building on the strong foundation he laid, I am confident that we can grow our legacy and tradition of breaking new grounds and expanding our spheres of influence to make an even bigger impact in the communities where we operate,” Muchene added.
