Botswana to launch minerals policy

The Ministry of Minerals Energy and Water Resources Kitso Mokaila said Wednesday it is currently working on a draft minerals policy before year-end.

Minister Mokaila on Wednesday told the ongoing Resource Sector Conference that a task team is currently developing the policy document which is aimed at increasing Botswana’s competitiveness and beneficiation within the sector.

Mokaila further stated that they are currently working on amending the Mines and Minerals Act to strength deterrents against illegal mining amongst other provisions.

Illegal sand mining along river banks has been a growing concern across the country.

“A task team has been set up to draft a Minerals Policy document,” said Mokaila.
