[Interview] Abel Muhatia, Founder, Biznews Kenya

Abel Muhatia is founder of Kenyan news platform, Biznews.co.ke. His interview with Africa Business Communities on the business environment in Kenya:

Would you please introduce Biznews Kenya?

Biznews is an online media agency trusted with the responsibility of offering latest news on business, technology and startups of Kenya. We operate in the media industry, with clients constituting of the online population, companies and business enthusiasts.

Because we are online-based, the information we put out can be viewed by any person in the world, and it stays accessible; it will never be deleted, therefore can act as an awesome reference point.

Why did you start Biznews Kenya?

Well, in most African media houses, politics and politics have been given much airtime than what makes up the backbone of the economy. Matters to do with Agriculture and business are rarely covered and when they are, it is done with little detail. I saw the need for bold and insightfu coverage of business and tech, among other topics.

What is did you do pre-Biznews Kenya?

I have been a journalist with the people daily newspaper, and a field officer with the Kenya news agency. I was also a news radio presenter with ECN Radio 99.9fm for two years.

What can be done by entrepreneurs and government to stimulate the business environment in Kenya?

I have one solid theory – embracing the digital age. The government and entrepreneurs should take advantage of digital facilities to offer their services. It’s fast and transparent, which could also help cut off corruption not just in Kenya, but in Africa as a whole.

How would you assess Kenya’s economic performance in the first 3 quarters of 2015?

It’s awesome. Kenya’s economy is fast growing and has become a leading economy in East Africa. I am not sure there is a better working environment in the region. The doing business report of 2015 by the World Bank clearly states this, and the reality is the same. However I must confess that corruption is a big challenge and that’s why I am a big campaigner of the digital platform services.
