Convenors of the 6th Broadcast And Digital Media Convention – Africa, which took place at the Serena Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda, have reported that the 150+ delegates who attended said it was an “outstanding success” and an “impressive gathering of senior broadcasters and media executives on the continent”.

Hosted by the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), with Broadcast Media Africa (BMA) and the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) as the conveners, the convention proceedings were packed with thought-provoking discussions and presentations.

Themed: ‘Digital Broadcasting – Promoting Our Values And Enriching Our Lives”, the convention had participants discussing and taking essential decisions on content, infrastructure and investment for broadcasting in the converged digital space.

Welcoming delegates to Rwanda and the Convention, Mr Arthur Asiimwe, Director General of the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, said, “The broadcasting landscape in Africa is changing, and the future of broadcasting shows that resilience will come from making creative and innovative at the heart of what we do. And as audience demands keep changing, the future shows that linear broadcasting is steadily phasing out.”

In his welcome speech, Mr Benjamin Pius, Chief Executive Officer of Broadcast Media Africa, said, “As the co-convener, we have brought together a cross-section of industry executives to examine the state-of-play and direction of the digital media broadcasting across Africa – with the view to collectively find practical African-centered solutions.”

In his remarks, Stanley Benjamin Similo, SABA President and Director General of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, said, “Broadcasting platforms and services across Southern Africa are determinedly being migrated to digital platforms. As this happens, industry practitioners and professionals are looking to fully understand how the new environment presents an advantage. This convention is a vital avenue to gaining that understanding. “
