Peter Stenslunde, Executive Director of Wirecard South Africa, talks to Africa Business Communities about the state of this financial commerce digital platform, its set up in Germany, growth, expansion and future plans.

Could you introduce the company?

Wirecard a fast-growing digital platforms in the area of financial commerce. We provide both corporate clients and consumers with an ever expanding ecosystem of real-time value-added services built around innovative digital payments by using an integrated B2B2C approach. This ecosystem concentrates on the areas payment and risk, retail and transaction banking, loyalty and coupon programmes in addition to data analytics and conversion rate enhancement across all sales channels (online, mobile, ePOS). Wirecard operates regulated financial institutions in several key markets, in addition to holding issuing and acquiring licenses from all major payment and card networks.

Wirecard AG is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

Who are your clients?

As of the end of 2017 (the most recent figures available) we had 36,000 large and medium-sized companies and 191,000 small companies as customers.

Where is Wirecard located?

Our head office is in Germany, Einsteinring 35, 85609 Aschheim. We also have an office in South Africa- Block C, Grosvenor Square, Century Way, Century City, Cape Town, 7441.

When was Wirecard founded and how is it funded?

Wirecard was founded in 1999 in Germany. The company has been listed on the stock exchange since 2002 and finances itself entirely from its own sales and profits.

What are the company’s Unique Selling Points?

Wirecard has a strong value chain with end-to-end fully digitised acquiring and issuing, leading to gross margin advantages. We boast of  increasing conversion through digitised data layer that connects data sources via dynamic algorithms (AI and self-learning algorithms).

How has the market responded to your services?

Very well - Wirecard is enjoying strong growth, which has recently led to its inclusion in the German share index DAX, where Germany's 30 most valuable listed companies – comparable to “blue chips” – are listed.

What are the ambitions of Wirecard as a company?

In short, we have a global presence and are growing worldwide, both geographically and in terms of sales and profits. We innovate and digitise payment – and see a lot of growth potential thanks to the fact that globally, 80-85% of money transactions worldwide are still made with cash, only 15-20% of all transactions are electronic with only 8-10% being fully digitised.
