The Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals inspects the East African Crude Oil Pipeline

The Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals has visited the Chongoleani Port facility of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project and has been satisfied with the progress of the project.

The committee conducted an inspection of the project at the main crude oil receiving and storage facility in Chongoleani, Tanga city. The committee's chairman, Hon. Dr. David Mathayo, led the committee on this visit, expressing satisfaction with the pace of construction progress of EACOP from Hoima, Uganda, to Chongoleani, Tanga.

Hon. Dr. Mathayo said that the committee's goal is to visit this project and witness the speed of construction, and we are truly pleased with the progress. We came last year to see the developments, but today we have found things to be completely different; the construction progress has been very rapid. He urged citizens to seize the opportunities arising from the project, stating that it would contribute to increasing the national income when completed in December 2025.

"When completed, this project will help increase the national income and employment, so I urge residents of the areas through which this project passes to take advantage of the opportunities arising from the project to increase their family incomes," Hon. Dr. Mathayo added.

The chairman also emphasized the importance of implementing social projects in the areas affected by the project. The Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy, Athumani Mbuttuka, stated that the Ministry of Energy has received the committee's advice and will oversee its effective implementation.

He mentioned that the government led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan had contributed a total of $207 million to the EACOP company's shares. 4,228 Tanzanians were employed by the project, 146 local service providers benefited, receiving a total of TZS 355 billion. A total of 9,822 citizens, equivalent to 99.2%, have been compensated with a total of TZS 35 billion. Thus, the work is progressing well.

Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy, Mbuttuka, also stated that the construction of the project is progressing rapidly and will be completed, starting operations in December 2025. So far, this project has reached a good stage, and the existing jobs have given priority to residents of the areas through which this project passes. However, we also expect to see many more opportunities being seized by the citizens. The project will be completed and operational by December 2025.

The visit was led by the Chairman of the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals, Hon. Dr. David Mathayo. Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy, Athumani Mbuttuka (representing the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy), and experts from the Ministry of Energy and the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) were also part of the visit to the EACOP project.
