Starcomms Partners Chinese Firm for Affordable Handsets

Starcomms Plc, Nigeria’s leading telecommunication operator is partnering with China Telecoms, a leading cell phone manufacturer to provide affordable and quality GSM handsets for its customers.

Mr. Logan Pather, Chief Executive Officer of Starcomms disclosed this in an interactive session with journalists in Lagos recently.

He said the partnership has become imperative because the company would invest heavily in capital expenditure in its present trading year in a bid to complete its network roll out in the country, adding that there will be a huge marketing push in both where they presently has coverage and potential ones to enhance the company’s profitability.

Pather said the company would acquire more subscribers and give more offerings to its customers this year as part of overall plan to get to know its customers better, remarking that under this strategy the company has begin to meet some of its leading dealers on a monthly in order to move forward.

He said the company is now in a transition to empower its dealers to handle complaints of customers within their territories while Starcomms would exit areas where its dealers has strong presence as part of the empowerment plan.

The chief executive said the company was also considering the possibility of giving free phones to its customers who stay with it for about 12 months as a way of encouraging them, adding that there will be emphasis on customer care and service.

He said the company was being repositioned to become valuable to its shareholders and other stakeholders through drastic cost cutting measures, adding that the management will be firm in that regard and ensure that everybody in the company is driven towards the same direction.

Pather said the company would strike a balance between cost reduction and expenditure because of the dynamic nature of the telecoms business in Nigeria.
