KwaZulu-Natal hosts Learner Focus Week
In support of government's call to improve science and technology education in South Africa, Sasol is one of the many companies who are involved in Learner Focus Week. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) will be hosting students from Limpopo, Northern Cape, Free State and KZN from Monday, 10 July 2011 – Friday, 15 July 2011.
Students have arrived in KZN to participate in the week long practical and theoretical exhibition. The project will offer insight to the energy sector and hopefully inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers and related professions. The focus week is hosted by the Department of Energy (DOE) and is themed, "Career opportunities in the energy sector."
Activities during the week are targeting learners from Grade 10 - 11 and its objective is to promote skills development and career guidance in the fields of science and mathematics among youth. It includes interactive exhibitions and presentations from key companies in the South African energy space.
To elevate the whole experience, Love Life will conduct a presentation on life skills, ensuring that the students are equipped beyond their careers. In addition, learners will participate in a quiz on science and mathematics. Top students will be honoured at a gala dinner hosted by the DOE Deputy Minister, Barbara Thompson.
After three days of practical and theoretical teaching, students will have a firm understanding of the scientific and mathematics field to guide their career choice.
Beyond the week's activity, Sasol aims to make a lasting impact on all students. In this light, Sasol will ensure that learners and teachers receive periodical tables, encyclopedias and Chemistry Industry Packs. The Chemistry Industries Resource Pack has been developed by Sasol, the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Catalysis, the University of Cape Town (UCT), and PetroSA with an aim of bringing chemistry alive in the classroom.
Pam Mudhray, Sasol's Group Community Affairs Manager says, "Sasol hopes that this project is successful in outlining both the thrill and importance of working in the energy sector. We aim to produce a generation of leaders who do not accept the ordinary, but are motivated to work towards excellence. Our collaboration with the DOE is crucial to give youth a substantial foundation so they can make informed decisions when choosing their career paths."
