[Kenya] Multi-agency team at the Mombasa port called upon to work with stakeholders to curb clearance hitches
Acting National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani has called on Government multi-agency team working at the Port of Mombasa to work closely with all stakeholders operating from the port to swiftly address bottlenecks that impede clearance of goods.
He said that while the Mombasa port was a premier port in the East African Region and has even higher potential to generate more revenue for the government, unnecessary bureaucracy should be done away with.
Amb. Yatani who was on a familiarization tour of the Kenya Ports Authority announced that the leadership of the National Treasury, Ministries of Interior and Trade will soon convene a meeting with stakeholders who were experiencing challenges.
He particularly called on the Kenya Revenue Authority KRA to be more innovative and tap on technology to address challenges that may slow down collection on the much needed revenue.
Regarding the ongoing onslaught on suspected tax payment evaders, the Acting CS said that it takes two or more individuals to deny the country revenue in form of tax and asked the private sector to support the government in fighting the vice.
Amb. Yatani noted it is unfortunate that the government is forced to borrow while Kenya has a high potential to collect enough revenue to ran the country. He said that if the ballooning debt was not checked there was the risk of mortgaging the welfare of the future generation it is unfortunate that and urged KRA staff to ensure that all revenue due to the government were collected and fully accounted for.
The Acting Cabinet Secretary who was accompanied by KRA Commissioner General Mr. Mburu Githii also held discussions with KPA Board Chairman (Rtd) General Joseph Kibwana and Regional Revenue Authority officials based at the port .
The officers from Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo DRC and South Sudan hailed the government of Kenya for undertaking far-reaching reforms which has seen cargo handling improved safe a few operation challenges such as delay in issuance of work permits.
