GTBank and Tate - Breaking New Frontiers in African Arts
The partnership between Guaranty Trust Bank plc and Tate Modern, UK has continued to generate immense interest in African Arts by the Global Art Community. The two organizations are holding the second part of the “Across the Board” exhibition project in Accra from February 21 to 23, 2013 at the Dei Centre for the Study of Contemporary Africa.
The Across the Board project is part of the 3-year partnership between Guaranty Trust Bank plc and Tate Modern Gallery, UK to showcase African Art to an international audience through exhibitions in different countries over the three year period. The first phase of the project held in the United Kingdom in November, 2012 and had numerous participants from all over the world. The other areas of the partnership include the creation of a dedicated curatorial post at Tate Modern to focus on African Art managed by Elvira Dyangani Ose and the establishment of an acquisition fund to enable the gallery enhance its holdings of works by African Artists.
The Ghanaian exhibition will create an engagement with current cultural and artistic production and will involve several African cities including: Algiers, Addis Ababa, Casablanca, Johannesburg, Dakar and Nairobi. Some of the renowned African artists taking part in this epoch making event include: Aida Muluneh, Gabi Ngcobo, Kader Attia, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, Ato Annan, Rikki Wemega-Kwawu, Joe Osae – Addo, Kofi Setordji and Nana Oforiatta-Ayim.
Commenting on the Accra project, Mr. Segun Agbaje, Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank plc stated that “the Bank is committed to the projection of African Art to the world and pleased with the progress made so far due to its on-going partnership with Tate. He said “our focus is to harness all the emerging network s in Africa and encourage professional development in arts whilst highlighting the impact of art on social change”.

Its most recent projects in art include the sponsorship of Yinka Shonibare’s Art Exhibition in West Yorkshire, UK and a film project called the African Metropolis aimed at promoting short films across Africa.
