Golfers to birdie for children in need

With the opening of this year’s Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour, thousands of children can look forward to benefiting from the Birdies for Kiddies campaign in which Vodacom donates R500 for every birdie scored during the tour to meet their needs.

Funds raised during the tour are given to five organisations – Project NOAH, Ndlovu Medical Trust, ACFS Community Education and Feeding Scheme, New Beginningz and Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) – that care for abandoned, orphaned, malnourished and abused children.

Birdies for Kiddies is now in its fourth year, and has grown substantially since it was launched in 2008 as Birdies Against Abuse with one organisation receiving the funds raised. In 2009, the name was changed to the current Birdies for Kiddies, and the number of beneficiaries increased to five. In 2010, a total of R3-million was raised by the end of the tour.

Mr Mthobi Tyamzashe, Vodacom Executive Director, CSI, said, “Vodacom has always been especially concerned about the plight of vulnerable children. Birdies for Kiddies has become a regular feature of Vodacom Origins of Golf, and is always enthusiastically supported by our golfers.”

While the amateur leg of the tournament began on Sunday 22 May, the professional Vodacom Origins of Golf teed off on 26 May at the Pretoria Country Club, Gauteng, with the final scheduled for September at the Legends Golf and Safari Resort in Limpopo. The five Birdies for Kiddies organisations will be hoping that many birdies are scored during the intervening months!
