DStv Mobile launches Mobile Drifta

DStv Mobile Ghana has launched a new mobile television decoder, the Drifta, which enables subscribers and non-subscribers to access DStv services anytime, anywhere on many more devices in Accra.

The mobile Drifta receives the DStv mobile broadcast signal known as Digital Video Broadcast Hand-held or DVB-H, and relays this signal over Wi-Fi to a range of Wi-Fi capable devices.

Country Manager of DStv Mobile Ghana, Edward Kwame Owusu, said they are proud to be on the cutting edge of mobile technology and responding to the increasingly mobile culture of Ghanaians.

“Through the Drifta, anyone who signs up to the service in Accra and Tema will be able to watch a selection of DStv channels on mobile devices such as iPads, iphones, iPods, laptops, smart phones and tablets.

He added that there are plans to expand the range of Drifta-compatible devices from the current Windows and iOS devices to include Blackberry, Symbian and Android smart phones.

While non-DStv, subscribers can purchase a drifta and subscribe to one of three bouquets – the free bouquet, the mini and maxi bouquet, DStv Premium subscribers on the other hand, will have access to the Maxi Plus bouquet at absolutely no additional charge after purchasing the Drifta hardware.

The Deputy Minister of Communications, Emmanuel Atukwei Armah, said the government has been encouraging innovation and investment in the country as one of the key drivers for development and job-creation.

“Information Communication Technology is a major facilitator of economic and social development for the country. The widespread availability of affordable, high-speed telecommunications (broadband) infrastructure and services is critical to support growth and development.

“ICT is also an important tool for increased efficiency and transparency in the public sector, and grants citizens common access to public services by making information readily available for decision-making (e-Governance).

“It is therefore in line with the coordinated programme of Economic and Social Development Policies of Ghana, from which the agenda for a shared growth and social development policies are drawn.  Accelerated development of ICT infrastructure is mentioned as a major catalyst for Ghana’s modernisation and rapid growth,” he said.

Mr. Armah added that the government, through the Ministry of Communication, has continuously supported and encouraged companies like MultiChoice Ghana in developing their business for many years, and has also ensured that Ghana is abreast with current information, entertainment through modern technology.
