AngloGold Ashanti scoops SAEE Excellence Award

The Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE) presented AngloGold Ashanti with the 2010 Excellence Award in recognition of making outstanding contributions to conserving energy by continuously driving for ultimate energy efficiency thereby actively alleviating the pressure on South Africa’s limited energy resources.

AngloGold Ashanti is a pro?active and visionary company when it comes to implementing energy efficiency throughout its various operations in South Africa. Between 2005 and 2008 energy savings in the order of 1 044 GWh (subject to independent measurement and verification) resulting in financial savings of more than R180 million was achieved.

Furthermore, since 2009 the company has started implementing projects that will save an
additional 23 MW in electrical demand. Other projects that could result in another 7 MW’s savings are currently under investigation.

Results like these are only achieved through the continuous efforts of competent and committed personnel.

Amongst the energy saving projects were the obvious actions of replacing incandescent lamps with CFLs run parallel with a maintenance?based replacement strategy to ensure the project provides continuous energy savings, and off course, the replacement of fluorescent fittings with electronic controlled ballasts. Other projects implemented include optimizing the use of motors, drives, pumping systems, machines, valves, winders, airconditioning, compressors, refrigeration systems, and many more.

The award was presented at the prestigious SAEE Annual Banquet held at Emperors Palace on the 10th of November, where the SAEE Convention and Exhibition for 2010 was formally opened. The SAEE annually recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the energy field through the SAEE Awards Program.
