Agreement on peace in Libya – the German-African Business Association hopes the country to stabilize

The Libyan opposing parties agreed during the UN peace negotiations on a first peace plan. The German-African Business Association appreciates this positive development and hopes on an establishment of peace in the near future. Christoph Kannengießer, the CEO of the German-African Business Association says: “The formation is an necessary requirement for the political and economic development of the country. The accomplished step during the UN peace negotiations is positively appreciated by us and we hope for a sustainable conflict resolution.”

When and whether the situation for the Libyan population and for the economy will improve cannot be predicted. Kannengießer concludes: “Nonetheless, the agreement is an important step into resilience and consolidation.”

Since the resignation of Muammar Al-Gaddafi in 2011, rival groups are claiming the authority. They are putting the resilience into danger and the groups are bringing the country into more chaos. A group in Tripolis explains to be part of the IS. This group stayed away on Sunday during the agreement. After the agreement the government is planning for new elections and a unity.

Before the civil war over 30 German companies were represented in the country. Because of the unsafe political developments many German companies took the distance. The trade volume between Germany and Libya was in 2009/2010 at an amount of 4,1 billions Euro. The Germans mainly imported fossil oil. In 2012 Libya was the fourth biggest fossil oil distributor in Germany and they belong to one of the biggest distributors worldwide.
