Adenuga, Glo Boss, Gives Nigerian Football Champions $1m
Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. (GCON), Chairman of Globacom and Africa's businessman extraordinaire, has splashed the sum of $1million (about N160 million) on the victorious Super Eagles for winning the 29th African Cup of Nations tournament which ended February 10th in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Chief Coach of the team, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi has also been promised a befitting official car and accommodation from the billionaire industrialist.
Dr. Adenuga announced the package shortly after the team's 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso's Stallions at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday. The Super Eagles presented the gold trophy to Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr in Johannesburg during a breakfast session on Monday. Those in attendance included members of the victorious team led by Captain Joseph Yobo, the coaching crew including Stephen Keshi and Daniel Amokachi and the Chairman of Nigerian Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari.
Dr. Adenuga has been flying in and out during the African Cup of Nations with senior members of Globacom to give the Super Eagles moral support in their quest to conquer Africa.
Dr. Adenuga commended the Super Eagles and the technical team for winning the African Cup of Nations and restoring Nigeria's glory in African Football.
He described the victory as "well deserved". "Your resilient spirit was evident in all the matches you played, coupled with the team work. The highly entertaining football the boys played is a welcome breath of fresh air. You have brought joy to Nigerians," said Dr. Adenuga.
He also commended Keshi for equalling Egypt's El- Gohari's record by emerging as the second African to win the African Cup of Nations as a player and coach.
Dr. Adenuga also promised that Glo will sponsor the Super Eagles' trip to the World Confederation Cup in June where they will play against top football nations like current World Cup champion, Spain and Uruguay.
As the major sponsor of the Super Eagles and official telecoms partner of the Nigerian Football Federation for the past 10 years, Globacom has stood solidly behind the Super Eagles. In the last 3 years, Globacom has also increased its support for the national teams, raising its sponsorship fee to N350m per annum.
Nigeria won the African Cup of Nations for the first time in 1980 when it hosted the competition in Lagos. This feat was repeated in 1994 in Tunisia when the team defeated Zambia in the finals preparatory to Nigeria's first appearance at the World Cup in USA.
Globacom is the major partner of the Nigeria Football Federation and official sponsor of Nigerian national teams.
