Rwanda launches first smartphone factory in Africa
Rwanda's President Paul Kagame launched a high tech smartphone factory in the country's capital Kigali, the first of its kind in Rwanda and Africa.
The Mara Phones high tech smartphone-manufacturing factory will integrate high tech manufacturing processes and will enhance its brand starting with two models, Mara X and Mara Z.
After a tour of the factory, President Kagame hailed the launch of another breakthrough for development in Rwanda and this is what he had to say:
"The Mara Phones joins a list of quality products that are made in our country. Today is another milestone in our journey to high tech made in Rwanda. I want to congratulate everyone involved in the engineering of this pioneering project."
Mara Phones Rwanda employs approximately 200 people, 90% of whom are local employees and 60% are women. The entire manufacturing process, from the motherboard to the packaging of the phones is done within the newly-opened factory.
