Ugandan secures $30 million for agriculture project
The government has obtained a $30 million World Bank loan to implement a project that will enhance productivity and value addition in agriculture.
The Eastern Africa Agricultural Productivity Project, to be implemented in 13 districts, will increase sharing of agricultural information, knowledge and technology.
Other countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania will benefit from the loan through their governments.
The loan was acquired through the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRIC & DB).
Dr Dan Ssamambo, the executive director NAGRIC & DB, said the programme would strengthen existing research in cassava and support production of improved dairy cattle to reduce importation.
He was at the weekend handing over equipment for artificial insemination to selected groups from beneficiary districts.
Dr Ssamambo said the five-year project will enhance regional specialisation in agricultural research, collaboration in training and dissemination of information as well as availability of improved genetic materials.
He said they hope to make Uganda a cassava regional centre through the National Agricultural Research Organisation (Naro) and promote the use of modern breeding technologies.
He said the project will also ensure the production of improved bulls and heifers on diary breeder farms and delivery of artificial insemination inputs to farmers.
