Successful launch of Nampula, Kenya Airways' 42nd African Destination

The much anticipated Kenya Airways inaugural flight to the northern hub city of Nampula Mozambique finally touched down at the Nampula international airport to a cheering welcome.

Led by Chief Operating Officer Bram Steller, the passengers and journalists alighted from the Embraer 170 LR after a one hour flight from Lilongwe where the aircraft had made a short stop over to refuel.

Nampula became the second city in Mozambique to be served by Kenya Airways as the airline proceeded on its drive to expand its route network across Africa. It joins the other 42 African cities and became the 51st one worldwide.

Speaking during the launch briefing to passengers and media at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, COO Bram Steller said that Kenya Airways was instrumental in discovering cities in Africa and that with the largest inland port in Africa and the longest pristine beaches on a stretch of 2,470 km Indian Ocean coastline, Nampula promised both traders and tourists a new African opportunity and experience.

“Though it is largely an agricultural economy Mozambique is a scenic country with landscape is mostly coastal lowlands, uplands in the centre, high plateaus in northwest, mountains in the west and the famous Zambezi River flowing through the north-central part of the nation,” he said.

He noted that the new service was a clear demonstration of Kenya Airways’ keen interest in relentlessly pursuing its route expansion program. “It has also come very close on the back of two recent routes that we successfully introduced- Luanda and Juba,” he added.

It also comes ahead of other African cities that the airline is expected to open in the next year – namely Ouagadougou, N’djamena and Point Noire.
