[South Africa] I’m Bored app rebrands to Fun Nearby

South Africa’s ‘what’s on’ sharing app, I’m Bored, has re-branded as Fun Nearby as the free events listing platform and service grows to become the go-to place for parents and kids to find fun things to do in their neighborhood.

Created by KRS Mobile’s Simplifier-in-Chief Lorraine Steyn, and her then 10-year-old son, in 2014, the rebrand aims to move away from the negativity associated with its former name-I am bored.

“When we analysed what this service accomplishes, we realised that the ‘bored’ moniker was negative and we wanted to promote the more positive aspect of having fun with the family,” said Steyn.

Though Funnearby.com retains much of the I’m Bored iconography, it has streamlined the event uploading process – which can now be done by event organisers directly.  It has also improved its categorisation and the geo-location function – on the site and via the Android and iOS apps. The service will continue to issue its newsletters and have a strong Facebook presence (currently over 50 000).

Fun Nearby features a map view that easily lets the user see what’s on nearby, supported by large images for easy browsing. Promoters can upload their own family-friendly events, and all events are curated before release to ensure that the standard of the content is high. A new feature due for release this week, will allow users to rate and comment on events, providing valuable community feedback on each listing.
