SMC Networks launches new router to offer locals broadband brilliance

SMC Networks, a global provider of LAN hardware and broadband connectivity devices, has announced the launch of the Barricade™ Wireless Gigabit Broadband Router (SMCWGBR14-N2) a high-performance wireless gateway that includes four Gigabit Ethernet ports, a USB 2.0 port for external storage devices, and 802.11n 300Mbps high-speed wireless functionality.

Featuring a Network Address Translation (NAT) firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) to protect from hacker attacks, the broadband router is an ideal, cost-effective solution for  demanding home and office applications like HD video streaming, large file sharing or peer-to-peer connections.

The SMCWGBR14-N2 includes comprehensive wireless security features with WPA/WPA2
Personal (PSK) and Enterprise (IEEE 802.1X) support, as well as offering the convenience of one-touch secure connectivity with Wi-Fi Protected SetupTM (WPS).

In addition, the router has a USB 2.0 port that can be used with an external USB hard disk to share music, videos, photos, and data with multiple users on the network, or to backup important files.

The solution is now available to South African digital lifestyle technology enthusiasts through SMC Networks South Africa.

Paul Luff, country manager, SMC Networks SA, says the technology offers users high-speed connectivity and the capacity to manage large, multimedia files quickly and securely.

“Networks, particularly within the home office or small office environment, are a focal point for the introduction and application of practical, affordable technology. In South Africa this environment is growing rapidly and we believe this technology addresses critical user considerations of secure backup, storage and connectivity,” says Luff.

The Barricade™ also enables users to enjoy extended wireless coverage thanks to three high-gain 3 dBi antennas—and because each external antenna is detachable, it is easy to swap out antennas if the need arises.

“SMC Networks is pleased to introduce the SMCWGBR14-N2 to the European market,“ comments  Jo Chang, European Product Manager. “The newest member of the Barricade™ family of ADSL/ADSL+, 3G broadband, VPN broadband, and Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet broadband routers, this wireless gateway is a simple, affordable Internet solution for home and SOHO users. With support for IGMP proxy and IGMP snooping, the high-performance Gigabit Ethernet broadband router is designed to allow users superior IPTV streaming capability. In addition, the router features an EZ Installation Wizard, making set-up quick and easy. ”

Features:

2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n WLAN with 3x3 Detachable 3 dBi MIMO Antennas
The SMCWGBR14-N2 Wi-Fi solution is compliant with 802.11n specifications. As a Wi Fi AP/router, the router can achieve a 300 Mbps data rate using three 11n MIMO detachable 3 dBi antennas. Compared with the 54 Mbps data rate of 802.11g technology, the device provides almost six times faster Wi-Fi throughput.

Gigabit Switch
The router has four Gigabit Ethernet LAN switch ports and one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port, meaning the Barricade™ is the perfect choice for HD video streaming and other high-bandwidth applications.

Data Storage Accessibility
The SMCWGBR14-N2 Barricade™ provides file sharing features when an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive is attached to the USB interface. Users can access the files from wired and wireless connections. When out of the home or office, the files can be accessed through FTP.

Multiple SSIDs
The router supports multiple Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs), up to four concurrently. This allows different access control and security for different Wi-Fi network segments, thus enabling the router to provide separate Wi-Fi networks for private and public use without sacrificing security.

Robust Security
The Barricade™ supports a high level of wired and wireless security to ensure your data is well protected. For example, a Network Address Translation (NAT) firewall with Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) is built-in to help protect internal hosts from hacker attacks. Wireless security includes WPA/WPA2 Personal and Enterprise support and Wi-Fi Protected SetupTM (WPS) for both push-button and PIN-configuration, enabling users to benefit from genuine one-touch wireless security.
