Nigeria's Centenary launch: Jonathan thanks Adenuga, others

President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed appreciation to eminent Nigerians and corporate organisations who participated actively towards making the launch of Nigeria's Centenary celebration a huge success.

President Jonathan gave the commendation while delivering an address to flag the Centenary anniversary celebration at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja on Monday, February 4. Among the personalities singled out by the Federal Government for their commitment to ensuring the success of the launch was Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr (GCON), the Chairman of Globacom Limited. Others were the President Of Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliko Dangote; Mr. Bisi Onasanya and First Bank; Mr. Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings; and Chief Cletus Ibeto and Ibeto Group of Companies.

"They have taken their pride of place and I urge all Nigerians to emulate them," said the President.

President Jonathan made particular reference to a mini-documentary entitled "The Future" and sponsored by Globacom Limited on the Centenary celebration which featured the President interacting with Nigerian children representing Nigeria's different ethnic nationalities. It highlighted how strong Nigeria could be as a nation if its people all worked together.

"In the documentary in which I appeared with the children, you will see that the children performed better than me. That means that our future is brighter," President Jonathan said in a light-hearted manner, drawing significant applause from the distinguished gathering which included the Vice President, Arch Namadi Sambo , the leadership of the National Assembly, Past Presidents of Nigeria, Governors, Ministers and Members of the Diplomatic Corps. Globacom is the official Announcer of the Centenary Celebration.

The President said he was pleased with the large turnout at the event and the interest the Centenary celebration has generated among Nigerians home and abroad.

The Centenary Celebration is aimed at restoring hope in the country, arousing patriotic instincts and consciousness in Nigerians, break persisting stereotypes and institute legacy projects to take Nigeria to greater heights in the years ahead.

Some of the activities lined up for the yearlong celebration include the construction of a Centenary City, Trade and Investment road shows, Centenary music competition and Carnivals among several other value adding programmes and events.
