Kenya Power increases capacity for meter testing equipment to enhance service delivery

Kenya Power has acquired two new single phase meter test benches of 40 positions each in a bid to enhance the capacity for testing and deployment of meters to its customers. The new equipment has raised the daily capacity for meter testing from 150 meters to 390 meters thus reducing the turnaround time for deployment of meters.

The Company has also acquired 25 portable testing units for use by the regional staff attending to industrial customers. This will enhance resolution of customer queries on meter readings and inspections on accuracy of meters at customer premises.

The Energy Act requires Kenya Power to confirm accuracy of meters before they are deployed to the field. Kenya Power’s meter laboratory is the only accredited laboratory for testing electrical energy meters in East and Central Africa having met requirements for the competence of testing and calibrating laboratories by the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS).

With the acquisition of the new meter testing equipment, the Company is targeting to increase the rate of deployment of meters, especially at this time when it is involved in accelerated connectivity. It is also envisaged that the new equipment will protect revenue for the Company as it will fast track resolution of issues arising from faulty meters.

The deployment of additional meter testing equipment is one of the several initiatives by the Company to enhance service delivery to customers. In the recent past, Kenya Power has introduced a mobile application where customers can key in meter readings for timely generation of bills and make enquires on several other issues of concern to them.

In addition, the Company has carried out several customer engagement forums and open days dubbed ‘Power Clinics’ to reach out to customers and address their complaints.
