Ghana: New fruit & vegetable logistical centre at Kotoka airport
Ghana is very busy improving the quality of its fruit and vegetable products even further. A logistic centre is being built at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. At the centre fruit and vegetable products can de be delivered on air pallets, but smaller producers can deliver on skids (wooden pallets) or even in boxes, which will be placed on air pallets in the centre. The ready for transport product can be stored in air-conditioned storage areas or without.
An Air pallet scanner is already available, so that a quick control by customs is possible with only a short interruption in the cooling chain. The capacity of the centre will be 110 tons per day at the height of the export season in March and mainly consist of Sliced Fruits, Pineapple, Mango, Papaya and various kinds of vegetables and flowers.
The design and building supervision are in the hands of Adviesburo Verhoef, the VEK Adviesgroep and a local partner AESL (GH). The cool-technical facilities are supplied by the local contractor Stamek Ltd., which have enlisted Celtic Koeling and for the logistic systems the firm of Saco. The cost of the project will be met by the Millennium Development Authority (US). Building started in December 2010 and will be finalised in November 2011.
Intensive discussion took place before the design as growers on the one side did not want to be confronted with high costs for handling, but on the other hand wanted to fall in line with the demands of the market. Consequently in the design expected growth has been included through modular planning. Both the logistic facilities and the possibilities for air-conditioning can be increased without further investments.
