Edge-Core Networks stacks up network value with new IPv6-ready switch

Edge-Core Networks Corporation , a professional networking solution provider offering a complete range of enterprise-level and service provider/carrier Ethernet networking equipment and services to customers and partners around the world, has announced the launch of the high-performance Fast Ethernet Layer 2/Layer 4 ES3510MA switch featuring eight 10/1000 and two combo Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45/SFP ports.

The ES3510MA is now available to the South African market via Edge-Core Network's distribution partner, Miro Distribution.

Ideal for desktop Fast Ethernet connectivity, be it wiring closet installations in a single office or a campus wide network, the solution uses IP clustering to create a virtual stack up to 36 switches that can be managed as a single entity with a single IP address.

The two Gigabit Ethernet combo ports offer uplink flexibility, allowing copper or fiber uplink ports for high-speed connections to servers or backbones.

Paul Luff, country manager, Edge-Core Networks, says the solution addresses the local need for cost-effective infrastructure that can effectively manage traffic on the network.

"By effective management we refer to a range of features that improve performance. Aspects such as wire-speed performance delivery, a loop-free network and redundant links, common user interface and security on ports all culminate to offer the user technology that truly helps manage the network and boost operations," says Luff.

Edward Ting, Edge-Core Networks' President, explained: "We are very excited to be able to introduce the ES3510MA to customers in the service provider, hospitality, campus networking, and branch connectivity enterprise markets.

This switch delivers a cost-effective solution, with the continuous availability, enhanced security, and advanced QoS features businesses require in an age where IT plays an increasingly critical role in success or failure. In addition, as the switch can operate in temperatures up to 45 degrees, the ES3510MA is perfect for campus-type networks in which air conditioning or fans are not available, even in the heart of the summer."

Features:

.               Performance and Scalability

Offering 5.6Gbps switching capacity, the switch delivers wire-speed performance that enables customers to take full advantage of existing high-performance PCs and laptops by significantly improving the responsiveness of applications and file transfer times. The two fiber links allow expansion over fiber optical cable, which is suitable for campuses and lower user-density buildings such as security and storage but require fiber expansions from there to other buildings.

.               Continuous Availability

Support for IEEE 802.1w Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol provides a loop-free network and redundant links to the core network with rapid convergence to ensure faster recovery from failed links, thus enhancing overall network stability and reliability. Multicast VLAN Registration (MVR) is designed for applications such as Media-on-Demand that use multicast traffic across the Ethernet network. Other features such as IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol, IGMP snooping, Voice VLAN, and IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging help network administrators ensure a robust network that is able to provide continuous availability.

.               Comprehensive QoS

Traffic is prioritized according to 802.1p, DSCP, IP precedence, and TCP/UDP port number, giving optimal performance to real-time applications such as voice and video. Asymmetric bidirectional rate-limiting, per port or per traffic class, preserves network bandwidth and allows maximum control of network resources.

.               Enhanced Security

Port Security ensures access to switch ports based on MAC address, limits the total number of devices using a switch port, and protects against MAC flooding attacks. Other features such as IEEE 802.1X port-based or MAC-based access control ensure all users are authorized before being granted access to the network, using standard-based dynamic VLAN assignment with a RADIUS server by guest VLAN. Additionally, the switch supports Access Control Lists (ACLs), Security Shell and Security Sockets Layer encryption via Telnet and Web management, TACACS+ 3.0 Authentication, and Private VLANs.

.               Simplified Management

An industry standard Command Line Interface (CLI) via console port or Telnet provides a common user interface and command set to manage the switch. IP Source Guard, DHCP snooping, and DHCP Option 82 also serve to maintain simplicity of management.

.               Support for IPv6

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), a suite of protocols and standards developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to replace IPv4's impending problem of IP address exhaustion, offer benefits such as dual-stacking, which allows IPv4 and IPv6 to co-exist in the same device and network, and tunneling, so IPv6 packets are able to traverse through legacy

IPv4 networks.

Luff says the solution accommodates business expansion and will add significant value to South Africa's growing hospitality market, as well as other areas of business that rely on high-speed campus-wide networks.
