The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa – ECA has signed a funding agreement of up to $ 1.6 million from the Government of Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The funding is in fulfillment of an agreement between ECA and a pool of funding partners under the rubric of a Joint Financing Arrangement (JFA), agreed on 12 July 2010.

The Swedish contribution will go towards supporting the implementation and monitoring of the ECA Business Plan for 2010-2012, which will be channelled to a pooled Trust Fund in accordance with the procedures set out in the JFA.

At the signing ceremony held at the ECA headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Swedish Ambassador to Ethiopia, Jens Orlander said the Government of Sweden believes in the role of ECA as a true partner on the African development playing field and is thus pleased to support the programme of work as contained in the Business Plan. “There is a lot more that needs to be done and SIDA is pleased to contribute to the efforts of making your work more effective,” he said.

For his part, Under Secretary-General and ECA’s Executive Secretary, Abdoulie Janneh expressed his gratitude to the Government of Sweden and SIDA for the partnership and continued support, which he said is in congruence with the huge challenges the continent is facing. He expressed his assurance that ECA would do its utmost to implement the Business Plan as programmed.
