Citizens portal to ease government online services access

The National Information Technology Authority of Uganda or NITA-U has set up the e-citizens portal, http://ecitizen.go.ug/, a one-stop online center for Government online services.

The portal is to allow the public to easily access informational and transactional services from the governments’ 74 ministries, Departments, and Agencies and Local Government.

The vision is to get to a point where every government service can be accessed on this portal, said Dr. Fredrick Kitogo, Director of planning, Research & Development at NITA-U.

Kitogo said Uganda is embracing e-governance and its young population needs to ensure efficient and transparent service delivery to an increasingly tech-savvy generation.

Some of the services that can be accessed are eTax, online registration for the Tax Identification Number (TIN) registration, business registration, trading license registration and social security statements among others.

Other services yet to be available on the portal are an automated electronic procurement system that will enable easy government procurement services, an e-payment gateway and a Unified Messaging and Collaboration System which will provide Email, Voice, Video, Social and Instant Messaging services to government offices.

The Government SMS Gateway which will allow government entities to push SMS notifications to citizens through its various e-services and applications and the Electronic Voucher system, which provides farmers in a specific cluster with subsidized farm inputs, improved agricultural infrastructure, post-harvest handling technologies and competitive prices for inputs and outputs.”
