Samuel Okwaraji (Nigeria)

Nigeria's Samuel Okwaraji was the first major on-field fatality in Africa. In 1989, he passed out in the 77th minute while participating for the Super Eagles in a World Cup qualifying match against Angola in Lagos, Nigeria. The 25-year-old, a law student on the books at VfB Stuttgart in Germany, had an enlarged heart and excessive blood pressure, according to an autopsy.

Marc-Vivien Foé (Cameroon)

Cameroon's Marc-Vivien Foé played as a defensive midfielder for both club and country. Foé was a member of the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup Cameroon team. On June 26, 2003, in the 72nd minute of a game between Cameroon and Colombia, Foé passed out in the center circle by himself.

Medics tried to restart the midfielder's heart for forty-five minutes until he was declared dead. He had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a hereditary disorder that raises the chance of passing out during exertion, was discovered during an autopsy. In honor of Foe, the best African player in Ligue 1, the top division in France, now receives an award.

Faty Papy (Burundi)

Faty Papy was a Burundian player who last played for Malanti Chiefs in the Premier League of Eswatini. Due to heart issues, Papy quit South African club Bidvest Wits in 2016 after four years. Papy made a comeback to football in 2018 by joining Real Kings of the National First Division. Real Kings dropped Papy in January 2019 as a result of a cardiac problem that had returned. Papy, who had previously been said to have a cardiac problem, passed away on April 25, 2019, while participating in a game for the Malanti Chiefs in Eswatini.

Patrick Ekeng (Cameroon)

In the 70th minute of a televised Romanian league game between his team Dinamo Bucharest and Viitorul, a Cameroonian international collapsed on the ground. He arrived at the hospital but could not be revived, and two hours later he was declared dead from heart failure.

David Oniya (Nigeria)

A Nigerian football player who was playing for Malaysian team T-Team against Kelantan collapsed three minutes into the game and died in the hospital less than an hour later.

Sekou Camara (Mali)

Sekou Camara collapsed on the field during a practice session for the Indonesian team Pelita Bandung Raya, currently known as Madura United, in Bandung. He was sent to the closest hospital in a hurry, but he passed away en route. A heart attack was the cause of death.

Cheick Tioté (Ivory Coast)

About two weeks to his 31st birthday, Tiote, who had only recently moved to Beijing Enterprises from Newcastle, collapsed during a training session having suffered a cardiac arrest. He was taken to the hospital right away, but was subsequently declared dead.

He was given a military funeral after his body was brought back to Ivory Coast. He was one of the best players in the country, playing 55 times for the Elephants and leading them to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
