AfDB Forum on Indigenous Peoples’ Development Issues in Africa

The African Development Bank (AfDB) (http://www.afdb.org) will host a forum on February 11-12, 2013 to set the tone for the Bank’s future engagement with indigenous peoples in Africa to ensure they benefit from economic growth as detailed in the Bank’s Long Term Strategy.

The forum will provide an opportunity for indigenous peoples (IPs) to engage with a wider audience and improve their participation in discussions with the Bank to ensure they have a say regarding economic development issues. The forum will also engender a healthy and open discussion on ways of enhancing the participation of indigenous populations in development decision-making and securing the flow of benefits in an inclusive and sustainable manner into their communities.

The two-day AfDB Forum on Indigenous Peoples’ Development Issues in Africa will to bring together a panel of experts, indigenous peoples’ groups, other relevant stakeholders and the Bank’s Management and Staff to share knowledge and experiences on the issues of indigenous peoples in Africa. Representatives from African countries will be invited to share their experiences regarding the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). 

Two sessions to be specifically aware of include the opening session and closing session. The opening session on Monday, February 11 from 9h00 – 10h00 will have statements from the following persons: Donald Kaberuka, President, African Development Bank, Aisha Abdullahi  Commissioner for Political Affairs, the African Union Commission, Professor Mthuli Ncube, Vice President and Chief Economist, African Development Bank, and Berina Kawandami, Deputy Minister of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, Zambia.

The closing session on Tuesday, February 12 from 11h15 – 12h30 will be a discussion between the following persons: Kanyinke Sena, Member, United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Kalidou Gadio, General Counsel, African Development Bank, General Kahinda Otafire, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Uganda, Ummy Mwalimu, Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children, United Republic of Tanzania, Victor Murinde, Director EADI, African Development Bank and Dr. Hussaini Abdu, Country Director, ActionAid, Nigeria.
