[Startup Interview] Renaldo Bothma, Managing Director, HomeFixer, South Africa

Renaldo Bothma is a professional rugby player and founder of a new app, Homefixer, an app to help fix any household related issue at the push of a button.

Would you please introduce your HomeFixer?

HomeFixer is a free mobile App that puts users in touch with tradesmen, service providers and companies involved in the home improvement industry. With an aim to take the pain out of household renovations and maintenance, the App is simple to use and assists users in finding rated service providers using its location functionality, while also providing the capability to obtain quotes from multiple companies.

When and why was it set up?

HomeFixer was officially launched on Thursday 17 May, but has been work in progress for the past year. The idea came when I was renovating my home and experienced significant difficulties with reliable and quality service providers. So I started to build the app. I am also aware that as a professional rugby player, my career can end at any point and I'd be needing something else to drive revenue. I currently play for the UK Harlequins and am captaining the Namibian side for the Rugby World Cup.

What is HomeFixer's unique selling point?

The HomeFixer app is like no other currently. It features an emergency function, giving access to service providers who offer 24-hour assistance. boasts keyword searches, location services, listing details, click actions and quote request options. Also included in the App is a handy rating and review system.

The technology approach used for the design and functionality was forward-thinking and as a result, we have a very intuitive and easy-to-follow app.

How has HomeFixer been received by the local community so far?

The app has been well received by the local community. Both service providers and users have already started using the app, proving its role within the home improvement industry.

What does HomeFixer need to grow?

All HomeFixer needs now is downloads, so we are actively encouraging people to visit the App Store and download the app. Both Android and IOS is available.

What are the next moves going forward?

We have some exciting news coming soon with Hirchs, South Africa’s number one appliance shop. We are also looking at launching an online hardware store.
