Port Louis, Durban and Cape Town best African cities to live in - Bangui, N'Djamena, Khartoum worst

Vienna is the world’s best city to live in. German-speaking cities dominate the rankings in the 18th Mercer Quality of Life study, with Vienna joined by Zurich, Munich, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt in the top-10.

Paris has tumbled down the league, falling 10 places to 37th, just ahead of London at 39th, almost entirely because of the city’s vulnerability to terrorist attacks.

1 Vienna Austria
2 Zurich Switzerland
3 Auckland New Zealand
4 Munich Germany
5 Vancouver Canada
6 Dusseldorf Germany
7 Frankfurt Germany
8 Geneva Switzerland
9 Copenhagen Denmark
10 Sydney Australia

The best African city to live in is Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. Wordwide Port Louis holds position number 83 out of 230 cities that were reviewed worldwide. Quality of life in Port Louis is slightly lower than in Warsaw (Poland, 80), Abu Dhabi (UAE, 81) and Bratislava (Slovakia, 82) but higher than in Taipei (Taiwan, 84), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia, 86) and Athens (Greece, 87).

After Port Louis are 3 South African cities: Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg. If there had been more South African cities in the survey they probably would have come out on high positions as well.

Three cities in the top-10 are in the Maghreb: Rabat, Casablanca and Tunis. Also in the top-10 are Windhoek and Gaborone.

Outside the African top-10 but with relatively high positions are Lusaka, Dakar, Libreville, Accra and Kampala.
