Vivo Energy Kenya partners with Multiple Hauliers (EA) Limited on road safety projects
Vivo Energy Kenya, the company that distributes and markets Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in the country, has partnered with Multiple Hauliers East Africa Limited, on road safety campaign projects. The partnership commenced on July 31st 2015 and will focus on training pupils in public primary schools situated along the Kenyan northern corridor on how to cross the road safely at all times.
The project concentrates on teaching children in lower primary and standard four due to the huge number of pupils in the schools. The first engagement of the two companies was at Ngeya Primary school in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County a public institution with 1,800 pupils and 35 teachers. The school has students ranging from early education development (ECD) to class eight. It is situated 800 metres from Mai Mahiu centre, which is a prime stopping station for all trucks.
Children from the school have to cross the busy Mai Mahiu/Naivasha road every day on their way to and from school.
Speaking during the event the head teacher Ms. Elizabeth Nyambura said that this training was long overdue and the gesture was welcomed, given the proximity of the school to the busy highway. ”Last year (2014) we recorded four fatalities amongst the students, and many other students within the school have survived knocked down by motorbikes and even trucks.” We are grateful to the two organizations for starting this programme and considering to educate our pupils.”
Clive Critchlow, General Manager & Customer Relations, Multiple Hauliers, said that this partnership with Vivo Energy Kenya was indeed timely. “Our partnership with Vivo Energy Kenya has come at the right time. We have been running this programme as Multiple Hauliers but with partners like Vivo Energy Kenya, we will be able to expand our scope and reach many more schools due to increased funding and manpower.”
Vivo Energy Kenya Managing Director Mr. Polycarp Igathe said that this is a noble project. “Vivo Energy Kenya, is delighted to be part of this project. There is need for children to be sensitized on how to safely cross the roads as they go and come back from school. These children are our future and if we do not protect them, then we are doing a disservice to our country.” He added, “Road safety is one of Vivo Energy’s CSR initiatives and we are delighted to be able to partner with Multiple Hauliers who is also our partner on the business front.”
A total of 800 students, were trained on the day. This is a continuous project, and the next engagement will be during the third school term, in another school. More training sessions will take place in 2016.
