Unitel plans expansion to Southern Africa countries

Angolan mobile operator Unitel is planning to expand its activities in the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), announced its chairman, Isabel dos Santos, in an interview to Angop. She said that there are ongoing studies to assess existing business opportunities in this region of the African continent. SADC comprises, in addition to Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Leshoto, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Unitel has more than 11 million customers nationwide.

The Telco has also acquired credit from the investment contract signed by the National Agency for Private Investment ANIP. Unitel will receive a large chunk of the USD 2.9 billion deal which will largely go into the extension of optical fibre infrastructure. This is in a bid to  connect more researchers

The information was released by the Secretary of State for Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Angela Braganca. According to the Angolan official, the Ministry of Finance of Angola will provide a guarantee for the loan. The project covers the planned South Atlantic fibre cable system and the cable of the Americas.
