Tunisia: HPR Adopts Draft Law On Electricity Production

The House of People's Representative (HPR) adopted, Wednesday, during a plenary session in Bardo, the draft law related to the production of electricity from renewable energy.

Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining Zakaria Hamad said Tunisia aims to produce 30% of electricity from renewable energy, the equivalent of 3,800 megawatts, with investment of 14 billion dinars.

This production will ensure, for the 2016-2020 period, energy saving of nearly 16 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE) .

The power production project also includes the production of biogas through waste processing.

Concerning the use of nuclear energy for electric power production, the minister noted that studies conducted in this context revealed that the production of this kind of energy is only possible from 2030 for technical reasons.
