[Tanzania] Partnership births improved mobile insurance service

Mobile service provider Tigo Tanzania has entered into a partnership with mobile delivered insurance company Milvik Tanzania and Resolution Insurance to introduce a new improved insurance service.

Dubbed Bima Mkononi, Swahili for insurance at your hands, the new service is an improvement from Tigo Bima which the mobile phone company introduced five years and which boasts of 500,000 subscribers.

The Bima Mkononi service offers uniquely designed products such as life insurance, hospitalization and personal accident cover for customers who actively use Tigo Pesa. To subscribe to the service a customer needs to dial *148*15#.

Announcing the launch in Dar es Salaam today, Milvik Country Manager, Tom Chaplin said: “This service helps to bridge the gap between customers and due to the increase in mobile penetration in both urban and rural Tanzania, we believe Bima Mkononi will be a major boost to push financial inclusion in the informal sector by enabling Tanzanians to access affordable insurance services from their phones”.

 “We urge all Tanzanians who do not have access to affordable health services or traditional health insurance to start using this service because it offers protection from financial risks and poor health for them and their families”, added Chaplin.

Speaking at the function, Tigo Head of Mobile Financial Services, Ruan Swanepoel said, “The launch of this service underlines Tigo’s commitment in promoting digital lifestyle transformation and its leadership in delivering cutting-edge technology and innovation by enabling Bima Mkononi be accessible via Tigo pesa”.

“This new service will be a great opportunity to Tigo customers to access insurance easily because the Bima Mkononi service aims to provide Tanzanians with affordable options for both health and life insurance”, added Swanepoel.
