[Tanzania] National Bank of Commerce prepares youth for job market with employment programme

At a time when unemployment among the youth in Tanzania is at an unprecedented highs, THE National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has launched an employment scheme that seeks to empower the youth and prepare them for the job market including being their own bosses.

Dubbed ‘Wajibika’ the program is targeting students from 25 universities and other institutions of learning in the capital Dar es Salaam with the plan of further roll out across the country.

According to the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth and Employment), Anthony Mavunde, who launched the programme, the government is prepared to make sure the youth get opportunity to develop vocational skills as well as academic qualification.

He said the government in collaboration with various stakeholders has prepared a five-year national plan for improving skills which among other things seeks to ensure graduates of higher learning institutions and other institutions of learning get the skills which meet demands of job market so that they can be employed or employ themselves after their studies.

The national plan also seeks to incorporate the private sector in setting and provide training opportunity for developing skills and practical training in their institutions so as to help the youth get the necessary skills after their studies.

The minister said the government planned to strengthen the National Development Fund which is under the Prime Minister’s Office to enable the youth get capital for their productive activities and business according to laid down rules and regulations.

The government will coordinate a directive for every district and municipal councils to set aside 5.0 per cent of their revenue for the youth and another 5.0 per cent to women for provide them with capital for those taking self-employment activities, he said.

Wajibika will be delivered online through a microsite that will be available through the NBC Citizenship page on the NBC website where students will be required to register for the programme which is available free of charge.

It has received thumbs up from The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). “We are very pleased to have received the endorsement of TCU for the Wajibika programme, as this has enabled the smooth introduction and hence registration of students for the programme much easier” NBC Board Chairman, Mr. Nehemiah Mchechu, said during the launch.
