Tanzania launches e-learning programme for primary schools

Sifuni Mchome, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, launched the program at an education exhibition on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.

“Tanzania could not escape from the fact that the world is becoming an increasingly digital world that calls for use of digital opportunities,” said Mchome.

He said the world has drastically changed and ICT was used in every sector and the government has decided to extend this to the education sector in order to utilize available opportunities for the use of digitized information in enabling acquisition of knowledge.

Agripina Habichi, Literacy and Numeracy Education Support coordinator, said the implementation of the program would involve over 20 government departments.

She said Literacy and Numeracy Education Support called for improved basic literacy and numeracy skills for children in and out of schools.

Habichi said the ministry had set targets that would ensure that children acquired required literacy and numeracy skills since they were the foundation for attainment of the required basic education knowledge.

Implementation of the program would be supported by the Global Partnership for Education, she said.

Yustella Baralusesa, the Commissioner for Education, said the government had received grant from Global Partnership for Education to enhance ICT in primary education especially from Standards one to four.

She said: “We have every reason to commend ourselves for this concerted effort and try our level best to ensure that this creativity can help to boost our education countrywide.”

However, she said, the education sector was still facing several challenges especially readiness for teachers to switch from traditional methodology of teaching to the digital world.

Baralusesa said more training would be provided to all teachers countrywide in order to increase capacity building on ICT so that they can easily provide education to children in schools.
