Tanzania banking regulator feted for role in financial inclusion

Tanzania’s central Bank, THE Bank of Tanzania (BoT), has received two global recognition for its role in advancing financial inclusion.

The awards given by the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI), the world’s leading organization network on financial inclusion policy and regulations, recognized the regulator for its efforts in targeting the unbanked population through bespoke financial services and products.

The regulator was announced the winner in the Leadership and Peer Review categories at the 2016 AFI Global Policy Forum held in Nadi, Fiji. The conference brought together 540 delegates from 82 countries.

Bank of Tanzania Deputy Governor (Economic and Financial Policies), Dr Natu Mwamba, received the two awards. AFI is It is a member-owned network that promotes and develops evidence-based policy solutions that improve the lives of the poor through the power of financial inclusion.

AFI, successfully held its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) as an independent organization with the unanimous adoption of the AFI Articles of Association, which included updates that will strengthen governance and enhance operational efficiency to better meet the needs of members.

The AFI Executive Team provided highlights of AFI’s strategy and performance over the past year, covering results and challenges, key performance indicators, membership and fee status, budget and finance, funding and the proposed strategic outlook for the new financial year.

A special session on adopting innovative regulatory approaches to financial technology (fintech) and regulatory technology (regtech) featured experiences from the Philippines, Malaysia, Brazil and the United States, and members supported a proposal for AFI to provide peer learning support in this area.
