[South Sudan] UNIDO and Japan unveil small scale business development project in Juba

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Government of Japan’s “Increased resilience and self-help capacities for reconstruction of livelihoods and sustained nutritional food security in South Sudan” project has been officially launched at the Kasaba-Kator Development Organization.

At the launch, high-level representatives of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Agriculture Jubek State, and Juba City Council called on the target beneficiaries to ensure cooperation and to commit fully to their graduation to small-scale food producers.

The project partners affirmed that skills training on entrepreneurship and food processing, and advice on establishing agribusinesses in stabilized communities will help beneficiaries to achieve this aim.

Speaking at the launch event, Kiya Masahiko, Ambassador of Japan to South Sudan, commended the Government and the people of South Sudan for their continued efforts to pursue the transition from emergency to sustainable development; and affirmed the continued interest of the Government and people of Japan in these efforts.

On the penultimate day of his tenure as ambassador, Masahiko expressed his best wishes to the partners and to the people of South Sudan. He expressed hope that this project can continue building the resilience of the country’s most vulnerable.

The launch event will be followed by five days of training for beneficiaries in communities hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and small business producers engaged in agricultural production.

A representative of UNIDO underlined the strategic importance of supporting private sector development in South Sudan to facilitate quicker recovery from a long time of conflict and for the reconstruction of livelihoods, particularly in relation to the needs of IDPs. This project integrates a sustainable capacity building approach guided by UNIDO experts and taking into consideration opportunities for women and youth.
