[Shoprite] South Africans SAVED big on groceries with Big Red Friday

While the British celebrated National Fish and Chip Day and the Americans tucked into sweet treats on National Doughnut Day on Friday, 5 June, South Africans had their own reason to celebrate when the country’s largest supermarket chain presented Big Red Friday, its largest ever one day savings promotion on grocery essentials.

Big Red Friday saw consumers save up to 50% on a range of food and household items. The one-day only sales opportunity was the Shoprite chain’s version of Black Friday, which attracted considerable attention in November last year when sister chain Checkers was the first supermarket to bring the sales promotion to South Africa. Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving Thursday in America, when retailers break with massively discounted merchandise and the concept has mushroomed across the world.

South African shoppers had access to unbelievable specials at more than 415 Shoprite supermarkets throughout South Africa. In keeping with Shoprite’s vision of always bringing consumers the lowest prices, Shoprite introduced this one-day only Big Red Friday promotion to help ease the economic burden of millions of consumers in its customer base.

According to Marketing Director Neil Schreuder, Shoprite’s Big Red Friday promotion was tailored to bring some welcome relief to consumers amidst trying economic times, marked by yet another recent fuel increase and a pending rise in electricity costs.

Schreuder adds: “The once-off deals were carefully selected to suit our customers’ shopping needs and we believe that customers will benefit immensely from this day of crazy shopping discounts from SA’s low price leader.”

All items were available during normal store trading hours, while stocks lasted, and certain categories of products had limits per customer to enable as many people as possible to share in the savings.
