Shoprite Supports Needy Schools With Stationery Worth R40 000

In a gesture aimed at making a contribution to effective teaching, the Shoprite supermarket chain recently donated stationery items to the value of R43 000 to needy schools when they collaborated with Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp on an initiative.

A collection of stationery items that were part of an operational “Back to School” display at the Shoprite Group’s Head Office was donated to Matthew Goniwe Memmorial High School in Khayelitsha (Western Cape) and Ntsintsana Junior Seconday School in Tabankulu (Eastern Cape), in partnership with stationery suppliers Staedtler, Alplas / Penflex, BIC, Henkel, Pilot, Sappi, Pentel, Flip File, Bostik and Max Frank.

Members of the public had to motivate their nomination to Elana and two of the most emotive and inspiring entries were selected to each receive R20 000 worth of stationery, including pens, pencils, stationery sets, fine liners, pencil cases, correction fluid, sharpeners, erasers, copy paper and more.

Both the schools are located in economically disadvantaged areas with high unemployment, poverty and social difficulties. Many parents struggle to contribute the full amount towards schools fees leaving schools under-resourced and in desperate need of a sufficient supply of good quality school supplies.

In addition to this, Shoprite identified a group of 82 pupils from an informal school arrangement based in a community hall in Lower Crossroads, Cape Town, to receive a stationery donation as part of the ongoing #Shareforgood campaign.

Shoprite sees itself as a responsible corporate citizen that aims to contribute on an on-going basis to the wellbeing of the communities where it does business. The Group’s social responsibility efforts focus on a number of areas, but particularly close to its heart are the most vulnerable people in our societies – women, senior citizens and our children. Shoprite believes in the potential inherent in the youth and that children should feel happy and nurtured, and be provided with opportunities for growth and learning.
