Seagate Storage Cloud launching in South Africa

Seagate will launch a long-term, unlimited-capacity cloud-based data storage service in South Africa early in 2016.

Unlike cloud-based offerings from competitors, Seagate said its Storage Cloud service will be hosted in South Africa at the Teraco data centre in Johannesburg.

Seagate Cloud Systems and Solutions CEO Mike Palmer said the service represents a direct local investment by Seagate in partnership with Sithabile of more than R13 million.

Sithabile said the service was designed for archival management, or unstructured data.

This data is sometimes referred to as dark data, because of the potentially harmful consequences of not knowing exactly what the data is all about, what information is contained in the files, and how long it should be retained for.
