S/African power tariff hike to affect Swaziland utility

With Swaziland importing 80 percent of power from South Africa, the Swaziland Electricity Company (SEC) will feel the pinch as Eskom wants electricity tariffs increase by 16.6 percent for 2016/2017, APA reports on Tuesday.

The Swaziland Energy Regulatory Authority (SERA) granted SEC 11 per cent tariff increase for two years, meaning SEC will apply for another increment in 2017 April.

Eskom is in a bid to secure a tariff increase of 16.6 percent for 2016/17 and its move will begin on Monday, with two weeks of public hearings by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), the first of which is in Cape Town.

In its application to NERSA, Eskom claims overruns or revenue shortfalls of US$1.6 billion for the 2013/14 financial year.

If NERSA determines that Eskom is entitled to recover the full amount from consumers, then tariffs for 2016/17 will rise 16.6 percent.
